Movies are the backbone of entertainment that us humans love to consume. Now why is that when in the modern day you could just sit in bed and scroll your phone for hours on end to get that dopamine rush? Because we always crave something that will get us invested and actually care about the plot, characters, and, story now are there hundreds of movies that will give this level of investment for the average person of course. But that does not mean all of them are as good as each other. Here is where american psycho comes in based off the book american psycho by Bret Ellis made in the early 1990's now a lot of people who watch this movie dont know that it is actually a satire it isent your standard thriller where the main character is a rich slasher man the movie and specifically the book hide the main character patrick bateman behind pitch black corporate satire and hyper materialism so on the outside bateman is a handsome young man whos dad owns the company but inside, inside is is a hollow man that needs to torture and murder woman to fulfill his nihilistic tendancy for violence now if your watching the movie for the first time it is a cultural classic but if you tear it apart its an extremely realistic representation of the insecurity and the desperate desire to fit into a highly corporate commercialized world of late 1980's america and wall street which still applys to this day if your going to end up consuming american psycho i recommend the movie as it is defiantly not family friendly it is much easier to consume then the counterpart book its based off of as i have seen both the movie adaptation is better in my opinion as the book contains depictions of necrophilia and cannibalism even if this makes the book sound like satans bible it really isent 70 percent of it is just talking about batemans obsession with certain music and how his business card is "pearl oak tinted" all of it is described in brutal detail but its more like browsing through a catalog then actually reading a murder scene even if its explicit and the book is highly controversial it is still a masterpiece in my eyes and many other peoples here is where the movie comes in also called american psycho based directly off the book. Now this is why i recommend it, it tones down the absolute most vile parts of the books but increases the depth of bateman and the pitch black corporate comedy i was talking about before also the actor that plays patrick bateman in the movie christian bale does an amazing job of portraying the insecurity of bateman's inner and outter self he also admits outloud to paul allen and says do you know im utterly insane i like to dissect girls while paul thinks bateman is another man named marcus paul has access to a fisher account and a better business card so bateman kills him this is one of the many examples that show modern america at its finest where no one connects and why i think it blends dark comedy, satire, thriller, and, gore perfectly the ending is great and leaves you not knowing what is going to happen.
